May Magazine Covers From Around the World

National Geographic magazine reaches 49 million print and digital readers in 33 languages worldwide.

The English edition of the May 2021 issue was focused on the ocean, featuring a cover story about the hidden world of whale culture. The story explores how scientists are now learning that whales have cultural differences, once thought to be unique to humans, like singing competitions and food preferences.

All 30 of the local-language editions followed the English edition’s ocean theme this month, with 28 editions using the same whale cover image, photographed by Brian Skerry.

The Indonesian edition promoted a local story on coral-rich Raja Ampat, and the Slovenian edition featured a local ocean story as well.
