National Geographic staff celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month this month with events hosted by HOLA DC at National Geographic.

HOLA DC is a Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) founded at National Geographic in support of the Latinx community and all its allies that fall within the DC Disney Chapter. HOLA DC is committed to celebrating the various Latino cultures and employees who embrace Hispanic heritage, promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and offering opportunities for growth and learning.

The Hispanic population is one of the largest growing populations in the United States, and yet we are likely the least represented in corporate America. Hispanic Heritage Month was a great opportunity to highlight our presence at Nat Geo, to inform and educate about our unique cultures, and to celebrate our Hispanic Heritage. It was our official coming out party—and it was perfect!

The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month included an end-of-summer fiesta, which was attended by more than 115 employees and had a line that wrapped around the floor for deliciously catered Hispanic food.

HOLA DC’s “Fireside Chat: A Discussion on Immigration” was a huge success. Serena Marshall, an ABC On-Air Correspondentand, and Fabricio Lopez from Disney Legal, discussed their experiences, both professionally and personally, with immigration. They shared important and surprising statistics and their discussion was moderated by NGP’s very own Deputy Chief Council and HOLA Executive Sponsor, Evelyn Miller.

HOLA DC closed out the month with a saff viewing of NGMundo’s latest original documentary, "Puerto Rico: Sobreviviendo a Maria," which highlighted the unbreakable spirit of Puerto Rico in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
